The White Tara is known as the Goddess of Compassion in Tibetan Buddhism. A female Buddha, she is most associated with practices to lengthen one's own lifespan and overcome life-threatening hindrances. In Tibet, her name is Sgrol-ma, meaning "she who saves." The mantra of Tara (om tare tuttare ture svaha) is the second most common mantra heard in Tibet, and it is commonly chanted with someone particular in mind.
